Language Placement Exams

Students, incoming and continuing, with any knowledge of Ancient Greek, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian, or Spanish who haven’t taken a course in these languages at The Claremont Colleges will be required to take a placement exam. The exams will need to be taken before your arrival on campus. Please read below for the various deadlines*. To take a placement exam outside of the dates listed below, please contact the language department directly.

The results allow the departments to place you in the appropriate level class to continue your study of a language.

All Pomona language placement exams will be available by July 08, 2024. The times listed are all PDT.

Ancient Greek

*All students who have previously studied Ancient Greek should contact Prof. Chinn (christopher.chinn@bonaprinting.com) to discuss their placement.

Chinese

All students must take the online component by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12th.
The Chinese placement test can be taken on the following website Chinese Test Quiz App.

French

*All students must take the online exam by 11:59 p.m. on Thur. Aug. 15th.
The French placement test is available via Sakai. Please read below for further Sakai information.

German

*All students must take the online exam by 11:59 p.m. on Thur. Aug. 15th.
The German placement test can be taken at any time. Please create the required login on the Emmersion website to take the placement exam.

Japanese

*All students should take the online component by 11:59 p.m. on Thur. Aug. 08th.
The Japanese placement test consists of 2 components; both are required. Part 1 is taken online via SakaiFor Part 2, you will be contacted by one of the Japanese instructors. Please read these directions carefully for further details on when and where the 2 components will be available.

Latin

*All students who have previously studied Latin should take the online exam by 11:59 p.m. on Fri. Sept. 13th.
The Latin placement test is available via Sakai. Please read below for further Sakai information.

Russian

*All students with knowledge of Russian must take the online exam by 11:55 p.m. on Wed. Aug. 28th.
The Russian placement test is available via Sakai. Please read below for further Sakai information.

Spanish

*All students must take the online exam by 11:59 p.m. on Thur. Aug. 15th.
The Spanish placement test can be taken at any time. Please create the required login on the Emmersion website to take the placement exam.


Arabic

The Arabic placement test is on Thursday, August 22 from 8:00a.m - 10:00a.m. 
The exam will be in-person at Roberts Hall North 105.

Italian

The Italian placement test open between July 1st and until August 12th.

If you have placed at an advanced level, this additional exam will take place in person on August 21.

Korean

The Korean placement test is on August 22nd from 8:00a.m - 10:00a.m.
The exam will be in-person at Roberts North 102.

Portuguese

The Portuguese placement test is on August 22nd from 8:00a.m - 10:00a.m.
The exam will be in-person at Roberts North 211

Please contact Prof. Valencia by email in advance of the Portuguese placement exam, so that you can receive a specific exam time.

 


Accessing the Sakai based Placement Exams

The online Sakai exams will be available on July 08th; direct your browser to the Sakai site and perform the following:

  1. Click on “Login” in the upper right corner.
  2. Then choose the name of your College from the pull-down menu under “Please Select Your College.”
  3. Then log in with your College Login ID.
  4. Reminder: you do need to have set up your College email in order to access the Sakai sites.
  5. If you’re an incoming student you will see multiple placement exam tabs along the top in Sakai. Your college’s ITS will have automatically added you to any online placement exams that are available in Sakai.
