This newsletter's student engagement feature: Draper Center for Community Partnerships + Rooftop Garden

There are many opportunities to join the sustainability world of the Claremont Colleges.

The Draper Center for Community Partnerships, a buzzing community engagement hub for students, faculty, and other community members, is home to the Rooftop Garden program. Rooftop Garden is an environmental education program between Pomona College and Teen Green where Claremont College Enviromentors develop positive mentorship relationships with Teen Green mentees.

Danie Hernandez (PO’25) is one of three coordinators for Rooftop Garden along with Lena Abed (PO’26) and Diana Castellanos (PO’24). (P.S. Diana is one of our amazing head EcoReps.)

Danie furthered her sustainability journey at the Claremont Colleges by “looking for opportunities that would help [her] keep a passion for community engagement.” Creating relationships through workshop creation and garden cultivation has fulfilled Danie’s intersectional interested in environmental justice because “you can’t have sustainability without focusing on collective programming and community wellbeing.”

This newsletter's creativity project / DIY feature: Betsy Ding (PO'23) farm dinner
Betsy Ding (PO’23) hosted a dinner that highlighted local ingredients from the Claremont farmers market, Pitzer Student Garden (@pitzerstudentgarden), and Pomona College Organic Farm (@pomonacollegefarm). She picked rosemary, garlic chives, and lavendar from Pitzer Student Garden and Pomona Organic Farm. From the Claremont farmers market, she bought local cheddar, plums, and melons. We encourage everyone at the 5Cs to cook with local ingredients and support small businesses and groups on campus within our community!
