The Geology Department is pleased to announce the 40th annual Woodford-Eckis Lectureship, which will be held on February 28th and 29th, 2020.
This year’s honored guest is Dr. Robert Hazen, a Senior Staff Scientist at Carnegie Institution’s Geophysical Laboratory and Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Sciences at George Mason University. Dr. Hazen’s extensive research span mineralogical and crystallographic studies, to astrobiology, and that work has blossomed into holistic studies of possible roles of minerals in the origin of life, mineral evolution, and the coevolution of the geosphere and biosphere. Dr. Hazen has authored more than 400 papers and 25 books.

At 8:15 PM in the Rose Hills Theater (Smith Campus Center), Prof. Hazen will deliver a lecture entitled “Chance, Necessity, and the Origins of Life” This talk is intended for a general audience, and is open to the public.

At 11AM in the Rose Hills Theater (Smith Campus Center), Prof. Hazen will deliver his second lecture entitled “The Story of Earth: How Life and Rocks have Co-Evolved”. This talk is also intended for a general audience, and is also open to the public.
